A rare and stately 18th century French Louis XVI period armoire, hand carved from walnut in the Limoges region of Limousin, known for its elegant Provincial interpretations of neoclassical furniture, circa 1760s. This monumental piece is a true testament to the architectural refinement and neoclassical symmetry that defines the Louis XVI period. Sculpted from dense, fine-grained walnut — a material reserved for only the wealthiest households — and richly aged to a luminous patina, this heirloom quality armoire is not only a functional storage piece but a lasting symbol of French sophistication and artisan mastery.

The bold architectural façade is crowned with a deeply molded, stepped cornice above a reeded frieze, elements that speak to Enlightenment ideals of balance and form. The symmetrical double doors are framed by fluted pilasters and anchored by a central fluted stile, reinforcing the classical rhythm and stately verticality of the piece. Raised panels, inset fluted carvings, and finely molded corners add sculptural depth, while subtle shadow lines create a sense of movement and proportion. The carved apron, with vertical reeded detailing, mirrors the frieze above, bringing elegant cohesion to the overall design. Short, slightly tapered feet with fluted carvings rest beneath paneled corner blocks, grounding the armoire in both structure and grace. Inside, three generous fixed shelves offer substantial storage, as practical today as when it was created nearly 270 years ago. Original, hand forged iron barrel hinges with decorative collars run nearly the full height of the doors — a hallmark of 18th century craftsmanship. These substantial hinges, with finely turned central barrels and spiral detailing, not only supported the considerable weight of the walnut doors but also added a handsome vertical accent, reinforcing the neoclassical symmetry of the piece. Their presence, along with the impressive locking mechanism and original pierced iron escutcheons and keyplate, exemplifies the artisan's skill and the French tradition of treating even functional elements as art. The large antique iron key, pierced with a cross motif, is a poignant clue that this armoire probably once stood in a French church or private chapel.

Examples of this caliber and scale are exceedingly rare. During the turbulent late 18th and early 19th centuries, original hardware was often stripped and repurposed for ammunition, making complete period armoires like this increasingly scarce. And while many French Provincial armoires were crafted from oak, walnut was reserved for only the most prestigious commissions. Its use here, in such monumental proportion, underscores the importance of the piece and its original owner’s elevated social status.

Originally introduced in the 16th century to store arms and armor, the French armoire evolved by the 18th century into the most prominent piece in a household — used to safeguard the family’s most valuable belongings, from fine linens to silver. The best cabinetmakers of the era drew inspiration from Italian, Spanish, and German forms but infused their work with a distinctly French elegance. By the time of Louis XVI, the armoire had reached its neoclassical zenith, balancing restraint with opulence, as seen so masterfully in this example.

A true connoisseur’s piece, this antique Louis XVI armoire embodies the grandeur of 18th century French design and is increasingly difficult to find in such original and beautifully preserved condition.

If you're developing games with Godot, you need this book
Format: Paperback
Godot is a fantastic game engine, and it has lots of aids to learning -- written tutorials, video tutorials, sample projects, one of the best manuals I've ever encountered. Still, it's nice to have a physical book you can hold in your lap, make notes in, and use as an overall guide to developing competence in Godot development. This is that book. It's has a logical flow, has genuinely useful sample projects, and is written in a clear, highly accessible style. If you are learning Godot, you can't do better than this book.

I didn’t really get a full grasp until reading the philosophy behind Godot.
Format: Paperback
Well paced and very readable. I worked through the online tutorials before buying this book but didn’t really get a full grasp until reading the philosophy behind Godot. Though I have been a C programmer for 34 years, and a Java developer for 22 years, and a Python developer for 18 years, I have never been seriously interested in a game engine until my son introduced me to Godot a couple of months ago. Godot is tremendous! I have even used Godot’s UI controls to produce wireframes for business apps.

Solid, albeit abbreviated, coverage of Godot Game Engine 3.0
Format: Paperback
Solid introduction to Godot. Lightly touches on most topics, enough to get you up to speed an moving with it, though I personally would prefer a book that included much more depth on each area covered. Granted that wouldn't be a Sams "in 24 hours" book, but rather more of a "definitive guide" or "bible" which this is not. There's definitely enough meat to sink your teeth into, and being the first (and presently only) available book, it's worth the price. Aside from content, docking one star for difficult to read glossy pages and light weight fonts in code samples... It's difficult to find a good angle to read the book without glare across the page from a light and my middle-aged eyes struggle a bit with the code samples. UPDATE -- I've decided I have to dock another star. While the book is written in English, its authors are not native english speakers. It seems a better job could have been done with editing and review. There are a lot of clunky sentences, and several instances where the instruction is unclear. A small example: "A trick to add a simple outline is to add a new material to the Next Pass property. In this new material, set it to Unshaded, add a Grow of 0.01, change the Cull mode to front, and set its color to black." For someone familiar with all the various groupings of properties in a spatial material node, that might be all the information needed, but this book is (I thought) aimed at people with less experience with the framework. Those handful of properties are scattered throughout several groups of properties, and in the case of grow, there's only a field to enter a value when you've clicked a checkbox first. This may be a minor thing, and one could probably make the argument that materials were covered a couple chapters prior -- though that section doesn't really mention all of these properties... Lots of little assumptions and oversights like that make the learning process a little more frustrating that it could be. The information that's there is still great, but if you have little or no experience with Godot, expect to have to do some extra legwork to fill in some gaps on your own.

Great for newcomers to Godot
Format: Paperback
Excellent book for beginners with Godot. It will however require some previous programing knowledge this book isn't so much a teaching you to code book instead its an explanation of the Godot software.
