The 1st to Die

The Women's Murder Club series is the second most popular detective series of all time (James Patterson's Alex Cross series is No. 1)Amazon.co.uk ReviewJames Patterson inaugurates a new crime series with the impressively complex First to Die: the Women's Murder Club, a group of San Francisco professionals--a homicide cop, an assistant district attorney, a pathologist and a reporter--share their information and thinking on cases. Someone is killing honeymoon couples on their first night together and nothing that we know about the killer is, we realise, entirely reliable:

The 2nd Chance

The Women's Murder Club series is the second most popular detective series of all time (James Patterson's Alex Cross series is No. 1)Amazon.co.uk ReviewIn 2nd Chance, a young girl is shot down on the steps of a San Francisco church, and Detective Lindsay Boxer decides that the time is right to reconvene the Women's Murder Club, the loosely-knit group that cracked a baffling mystery in James Patterson's earlier 1st to Die.

The 3rd Degree

The third novel in the Women's Murder Club series. One of the best-loved heroines from the Women's Murder Club is about to die. Which one will it be? Detective Lindsay Boxer is jogging along a beautiful San Francisco street as a ferocious blast rips through the neighbourhood. A townhouse owned by an internet magnate explodes into flames, three people die and a sinister note signed 'August Spies' is found at the scene. Soon a wave of violence sweeps through the city - and it seems that whoever is behind it is intent on killing someone every three days.

The 4th of July

In a late-night showdown, Detective Lindsay Boxer has to make an instantaneous decision: in self-defence she fires her weapon and sets off a chain of events that leaves a police force disgraced, a city divided and a family destroyed. Now everything shes worked for her entire life hinges on the decision of twelve jurors. To escape the media circus, Lindsay retreats to the picturesque town of Half Moon Bay. Soon after, a string of grisly murders punches through the community.

The 5th Horseman

The fifth novel in the Women's Murder Club series. A young mother is recuperating in a top San Francisco hospital when suddenly she's gasping for breath. The call button fails to bring help in time. How and why did this happen? With help from the newest member of the Women's Murder Club, Yuki Castellano, Lieutenant Lindsay Boxer discovers that this is not the hospital's first suspicious case.

The 6th Target

When a lone gunman goes on a shooting spree aboard a packed San Francisco ferry, Lieutenant Lindsay Boxer is called in to investigate. At the scene she finds three people dead and Claire Washburn fighting for her life. Lindsay promises to find whoever did this. But it's a promise she may not be able to keep.As the investigation makes its way to court, news of a child abduction comes through.

7th Heaven

Detective Lindsay Boxer and the Women's Murder Club are at breaking point.

San Francisco's wealthiest citizens are being targeted in lethal arson attacks.

But Lindsay's investigation is complicated by the news that the governor's popular son, who mysteriously vanished long ago, may have resurfaced.

Under immense political pressure to crack both cases, Lindsay starts to wonder if they're connected...

8th Confession

When a rock star, a fashion designer, a software tycoon and a millionaire heiress are all murdered in mysterious circumstances, Detective Lindsay Boxer is quickly assigned to the high-profile investigation.

Few people are as interested when a local hero, Bagman Jesus, is found brutally executed. Reporter Cindy Thomas, however, becomes fascinated by his story. He was loved by so many - who would want to kill him? Could the down-and-out Samaritan have been hiding a dark secret?

Both Lindsay and Cindy need the help of their fellow members of the Women's Murder Club to crack these complicated cases; but with tensions running high, will the friends be strong enough to stick together, or will the strain tear them apart?

9th Judgement

A young mother and her infant child are ruthlessly gunned down while returning to their car in the garage of a shopping mall. There are no witnesses, and Detective Lindsay Boxer is left with only one shred of evidence: a cryptic message scrawled across the windshield in blood-red lipstick.

The same night, the wife of A-list actor Marcus Dowling walks in on a cat burglar who is about to steal millions of dollars' worth of precious jewels. In just seconds there is an empty safe, a lifeless body, and another mystery that throws San Francisco into hysteria.

Before Lindsay and her friends can piece together either case, one of the killers forces Lindsay to put her own life on the line - but is it enough to save the city?

10th Anniversary

Detective Lindsay Boxer's long-awaited wedding celebration becomes a distant memory when she is called to investigate a horrendous crime: a badly injured teenage girl is left for dead, and her newborn baby is nowhere to be found. Lindsay discovers that not only is there no trace of the criminals - but that the victim may be keeping secrets.

At the same time, Assistant District Attorney Yuki Castellano is prosecuting the biggest case of her life - a woman who has been accused of murdering her husband in front of her two young children. Yuki's career rests on a guilty verdict, so when Lindsay finds evidence that could save the defendant, she is forced to choose. Should she trust her best friend or follow her instinct?

11th Hour

A weapon stolen from a police evidence locker is used in a series of vigilante murders. Detective Lindsay Boxer must investigate her closest colleagues - and ask herself which of her friends she can trust.

Also on Lindsay’s to-do list: a grisly scene in a famous actor's garden, where two severed heads have been left. When a third is unearthed, Lindsay is left wondering how many heads will roll before she catches the killer.

Amid all this, Lindsay struggles with her pregnancy and the vindictive reporter dragging her personal life into the public eye. She and her unborn baby are heading into dangerous territory…

12th Of Never

Detective Lindsay Boxer is stunned when an eccentric professor walks into her homicide department to report a murder. The catch is that the murder hasn’t happened yet – but when it does, the professor’s prophecy is correct in every detail.

A KILLER’S RESURRECTION

Meanwhile, a serial killer wakes from a two-year coma. He says he’s ready to reveal where the bodies are buried – but Lindsay suspects he has a much more sinister scheme in mind.

A DETECTIVE’S NIGHTMARE

As Lindsay and the Women's Murder Club investigate, she's soon pushed to breaking point – and she finds herself faced with the possibility of the most devastating loss imaginable.

CAN SHE SAVE HER FUTURE?

Unlucky 13

When two dead bodies are found inside a wrecked car on the Golden Gate Bridge, Detective Lindsay Boxer knows it's no accident. As she investigates, disturbing news reaches her ears: a former police colleague, now unmasked as a ruthless murderer, is back in San Francisco after escaping custody, bent on paying a visit to some old

14th Deadly Sin

The Women's Murder Club are recovering from their most recent ordeal. With reporter Cindy Thomas having healed from her gunshot wound and attorney Yuki Castellano considering a change in career after her own near-death experience, Detective Lindsay Boxer is just happy they're all still alive.

15th Affair

Detective Lindsay Boxer is dispatched to a luxury hotel, where four are dead: a man who checked in under a false name, a man and a woman in a room full of surveillance equipment, and a maid who saw too much.

16th Seduction

Fifteen months ago, Detective Lindsay Boxer had the perfect life with her beautiful baby daughter and her loving husband Joe. That was before she discovered everything she knew about Joe was a lie – and his betrayal cuts deeper than anything she's ever known.

17th Suspect

Detective Lindsay Boxer investigates a methodical yet unpredictable series of shootings of the homeless in San Francisco. A tip from a confidential informant leads her to disturbing conclusions – something has gone very wrong inside the police department itself.

18th Abduction

'Everything you love about Patterson and the Women's Murder Club – smart characters, shocking twists, and a villain so evil you count down to the very last page to discover what will happen next.' LISA GARDNER, the international No. 1 bestselling author.

 19th Christmas

Sergeant Lindsay Boxer is looking forward to spending time with her family over the holidays. But when she receives a tip-off that the biggest heist ever to hit San Francisco is being planned for Christmas Day, everything changes.

Solid and Helpful but left me wishing for a little more
Format: Paperback
I loved the first 8 chapters - the last three fizzled out for me. It makes me wonder if even the first eight chapters could've been abridged and the whole thing reduced to a pithy booklet. That being said, the first eight chapters contain some excellent material that I will be incorporating not only into my own life, but into my toolbox of material to use in helping others. The best material for me was in: > Ch. 6, "What Changes You?" - He has a simple, practical grid of the basic "Five Factors of Sanctification." - Foundationally, God changes you. - Secondly, The Word of Truth changes you. - Third, Wise People change you. - Fourth, Suffering and Struggling changes you. - Finally, You change. "Constructive change occurs through the interplay of these five factors: God, Scripture, other People, Life Circumstances, and the Human Heart." "Foolishness either overcomplicates or oversimplifies." > Ch. 2, "Is there One Key to Sanctification?" This is his great critique of the idea that there's a master-key to the Christian life, some fool-proof, secret principle that changes everything for everyone. We tend to think that the thing that revolutionizes everything for me, must be "the key" for everyone. But we're too complex and the Word and life is too diverse for there to be one master key solution. "Theological fads and fashions come and go" - but part of the counsel of God was never intended to give us the benefits of "the whole counsel of God." New days come and new challenges arise, and we have to keep on pressing on. Our variety of needs and the varieties of helps necessarily defy "reductionism." There is no single key. "Progressive sanctification is about how we live in between God's laying the cornerstone and setting the capstone." > Ch. 3, "Truth Unbalanced and Rebalancing" - If I might reword David's principle, slightly, In ministry, we over-emphasize one aspect of truth for the sake of application. In David's words, "Ministry unbalances truth for the sake of relevance; theology rebalances truth for the sake of comprehensiveness." We can only say one thing at a time and a person, practically, can only work on one thing at a time. So we make much of a single thing, and then always try to bring it back into alignment with the whole of life and the whole counsel of God. "You do not build a house with only one tool in your toolbox when God gives you a truckload of tools. But you use your tools one at a time, the right tool for the right job." "In the long run, a single truth harped on will disappoint even its devotees." > 5. "We Are Sanctified By Remembering Our Justification." Throughout the book, David Powlison has been coming back to the concrete, recent example of a sanctification key, advocated by many: Remember the past grace of justification; Repreach the gospel to yourself every day; Realize that you are accepted by God because of the merits of Christ, not your own. In this chapter he highlights that this is certainly one of the tools in our toolbox - sometimes this is the very thing we need for progress in sanctification. But it is but one part of a larger whole. A greater point to always have in mind is that God is for us: He was, is, still is, and always will be for us. Don't just look to past grace, but also to present grace and future grace, as well as many other useful motivations. David's personal testimonies in chapters 7 and 8 are rich. He weaves in the interplay of the five agents of change. Very good. "There is a reason that 'Don't be afraid" (in all its variants) is the most common command in all of Scripture." There is also a beautiful section in the last chapter describing the contrast between the peace of the believer exemplified in a text like Psalm 23, and the "anti-psalm" emptiness of the unbeliever whose life ends at the end of the valley of the shadow of death. Very good, but a bit disappointing to me. Powlison is true physician of the soul. When he speaks I want to listen. I would recommend Kevin DeYoung's, "The Hole in Our Holiness: Filling the Gap between Gospel Passion and the Pursuit of Godliness" as an additional and very satisfying book on this subject.

God Works to Deepen Faith and Enlarge Love
Format: Paperback
What a great little book! I hope you will pick up a copy, read it, and reread it. Don't be put off by its brevity (123 pages including end notes and indices). There is depth here. Powlison rejects a "one-size-fits-all" understanding of sanctification, calling for "multiple mundane examples" of Christian growth--calling, in short, for stories of real people in real circumstances, people in and through whom God works in a great variety of ways to deepen faith (vertical transformation) and enlarge love (horizontal transformation). There are several great "take aways" in this book: seven implications of the cross of Christ, five cooperating elements of sanctification, three features of the stories people tell when they describe how God works in their lives to bring about change, and, on top of that, three great stories of growth in grace. I highly recommend David Powlison's How Does Sanctification Work? It won't take you long to read, and it will repay the time you invest with multiple dividends.

Loving Self and Others Well as We Grow
Format: Kindle
This is an excellent discussion of how we ourselves change/mature and how we can love others well on their unique journey. And unique is stressed here - he's a counselor and well knows that people are unique and deserve and require unique counsel. We all receive love differently, in the specific moment and in the specific stage of life and circumstance. His theology is sound and his writing is oh so very clear and beautiful. I almost weep with joy at some of his deep reflections. His "own story" chapters are very insightful as samples of how he and we move from a place we don't want to be (unloving and selfish) to where we can be (loving other well). It's less of a checklist of how to do this than an observation of what's happened in his life and others. It can give a teachable heart a boost of self-compassion and compassion for others.

Need people less, love them more.
Format: Paperback
I just finished this book. AWESOME!!! I got the book simply because of the title and one phrase that hit me hard. "We have to learn to need people less and love them more." The introduction is such that it gets you excited about what you are about to read. But then, the first few chapters, you almost feel as if you've been deceived. But he's just setting things up. I don't think I've ever read a book that continues to get better as you read it. The best part of the book is the last section of the last chapter. Get it. Read it. You will benefit. I promise. Learn to need people less and love them more as you begin decrease your fear of man and increase your fear of the Lord.
